Iowa State University of Science and Technology, more commonly known as Iowa State University, or simply ISU, is a public land-grant and space-grant, research university, located in Ames, which is a city located in central Iowa, in Story County, approximately 30 miles north of Des Moines. During the 2000 census, Ames’ population was estimated at a number of nearly 51 000 inhabitants, fact which makes it the largest city in Story County.
ISU’s history started in 1856, when the State Agricultural College and Model Farm was established by the Iowa General Assembly, Story County being chosen as the institution’s location on June 21, 1859. Iowa accepted the provisions of the Morrill Act of 1862, and Iowa State became the 1st institution in the nation, designated as a land-grant college.
According to the U.S. News & World Report, ISU is 85th among national universities and 21st, according to the Washington Monthly. The university is continuously ranked among the top 50 US public universities, and it is best known for its degree programs in agriculture, science and engineering. The National Science Foundation places ISU on the 94th place, in the nation, in research and development for science and engineering and on the 78th place in total research and development expenditures.
The athletic teams from ISU are known as the Iowa State Cyclones, who compete in NCAA’s Division I-A, as members of the Big 12 Conference, in various sports, their most notable games being in wrestling, in which they captured the NCAA tournament title 8 times, between 1928 and 1987, also winning the Big 12 Conference Tourney, in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Their mascot is known as simply Cy, which was voted by fans, on the CBS Sports website, as the `Most Dominant College Mascot on Earth`.
The list of notable ISU alumni contains resonant names such as Clayton Anderson - NASA astronaut, Steve Bales - famous NASA engineer, Robert L. Bartley - editor of Wall Street Journal opinion page, vice-president of Dow Jones & Company, Bob O. Evans - computer pioneer and National Medal of Technology recipient, Velmer A. Fassel - creator of inductively coupled plasma for mass spectrometry, as well as numerous other people, who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
